A Simple Explanation - Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate Marketing A Brief Introduction
If you're brand new to the world of affiliate marketing then this will give a quick introduction.
There are two sides to affiliate marketing.
- You are the affiliate marketer recommending and promoting other people's products and/or services.
- You are the product owner and you have affiliates recommending and promoting your products and services.
The Affiliate Marketer
An affiliate marketer will recommend and promote other people's products/services for a commission each time a sale is made from their referral.
With the technology available online today there are various methods of tracking sales and making sure the correct affiliate receives their commissions for sales they have referred.
In many cases you can sign up to a websites affiliate program, receive your special tracking link and you're ready to promote.
Affiliate marketing is a simple and quick way to starting a business online. HOWEVER like all businesses it requires work on the affiliates part to send people to the sites that pay them a commission.
This is usually done by either:
- Placing a link on their existing website(s)
- Promoting the link in an email out to their prospects and customers
- Paying for an advert or promotion that sends people via their affiliate link to a site they are promoting. In this case the affiliate will focus on making sure that the money they invest in advertising is less than what they earn in commissions.
Most affiliate programs will provide tools in the form of graphics, banners, promotional emails, special offers, articles, reviews, etc for the affiliate to use to help them make sales.
It is in the best interests of the product owner to make it as easy as possible for the affiliate to make a sale. If sales are made the affiliate will continue to promote the product earning themselves commissions.
The commissions paid do vary from business to business and product to product. The 'traditional' commission amount on digital products was 50% however in competitive markets that can be as high as 100%! This is to encourage affiliates to promote the product.
With physical products commissions can range from less than 5% upwards, usually around the 25% to 40% mark, however there are exceptions that go higher (we pay higher than 40% on many of our physical products.)
